My Story: Little Designer
My name is Renate Weyer. I am a fashion designer by trade, a wife, and a mother of 5 beautiful kids. As a little girl, I used to sit and watch my mom pin paper patterns to fabric, cut the patterns out and carefully sew them together. I would watch pieces of fabric come alive into something beautiful. I soon followed suit by collecting all the offcuts of fabric that fell from her cutting table and would then apply my creativity to design a new wardrobe for my Barbie dolls. It wasn't always the most refined creations, but I loved them and was very proud to show them off. That is where my love for design was born…

My Story: Teen Designer
I remember paging through magazines as a teenager, hunting for the latest trends, trying to pin down an outfit I would like to wear to the upcoming party, something different and unique that no one else would have. There was a fabric shop within walking distance from our house. I would walk to the shop after school to hunt for the right fabrics, then rush home to create the design I had drawn up the day before. On Saturday evening that outfit would be ready, and I would arrive in style wearing what I thought was something fabulous. It was a no-brainer that my career of choice would be to become a Fashion Designer

My Story: Fashion Designer
After 21 years in the Fashion Industry, I realized that I needed to give back. I started teaching sewing classes for adults and children which proved to be a lot of fun and rewarding. I remembered sitting on the floor making doll clothes with my mother's fabric offcuts and wanted that for my children. I also realized that our kids are not being taught any of the basic sewing skills in schools anymore and that this special craft that I have loved and made a living from for so long was slowly dying.

Little Designer Rediscovered
So that's when it hit me, we need to invest in the next generation of 'Little Designers'. The objective is to inspire creativity within kids born in the digital age to rediscover the joy of creating something with a piece of fabric, scissors, needle & thread. And just like that the Little Designer DIY sewing kits were born.
